This is something we’re very proud of here at S&K: Plenty of Time - 20 Years of Chilmark Cricket Club. 156 pages, 50000 words, well over a hundred photos, five pages of wonderfully presented statistics, a glorious cover photo and a story well told.
When the initial conversation around the book took place in September of 2021, we thought it would be 40000 words at the most, but we soon discovered that the more you dig, the more stories you find. This is especially true of clubs like Chilmark where, just like the pub, the school and the church, local sports teams form integral parts of the community. It’s where people can gather - not just the players - but the village as a whole, to share stories, catch up and let the kids play in the sun. Everyone is a character in a village, and so the stories that happen to them on the field are stories to everyone off it. It’s what makes village cricket so appealing, and a book like this so appealing to the village.
Plenty of Time - 20 Years of Chilmark Cricket Club is a Deluxe Anniversary Edition product. Written by an S&K writer (in this case Brand King) and expertly put together by our lead layout designer Patrice Sweeney, it tells the story of the club’s origins, the people that made it come together, those that have sustained it for two decades, and those that are carrying it forward. Being a sports club there are numbers, too: leading run scorers, wicket takers, averages and games played. We presented these in eye-catching tables, and then utilised player silhouettes to add a unique, personal detail.
The whole project was co-ordinated with the club chairman, ensuring the right people were interviewed, the right stories told, and the correct voice was used throughout. Each club is different. Some like to come across as traditional and professional, others prefer a tongue-in-cheek approach. Whatever it is, the job of the writer is to articulate the stories in that voice and deliver a book that the club can call their own. We think we achieved that with Plenty of Time - 20 Years of Chilmark Cricket Club.
